Restoring Justice with Indigenous Peoples

Donate to the Shawnee Seed Sanctuary by clicking here!

We acknowledge that we gather on land that was stolen from native peoples who have sustained it for generations.

We recognize that this building is built on the ancestral homelands and resources of the Saawanwa, Myaamiaki, Lenape, and Bodwewadmik — Peoples who are the past, present and future caretakers of this land. We acknowledge the wisdom lost to the world for many generations due to colonization and attempted genocide, and to appreciate the efforts of present-day Indigenous people who are committed to preserving and relearning their people’s languages and ways of life.

We, the congregation of the UU Church of Bloomington, commit ourselves to learning the histories of these people, and to building relationships that help prevent further harm and work toward creating more justice.

On June 14, 2026, our pulpit guest was Ryan Conway, a Shawnee enrolled member who is working to restore native culture in Indiana and beyond. In his sermon, Ryan made some specific suggestions for those of us who wish to repair damage done by settler colonialism and the policies and practices that continue today.

  1. Learn the history.
  2. Rekindle our own connections to the land.
  3. Do the work of repair.

This page contains resources and information that we hope will be helpful for people wishing to pursue these actions.

Prophetstown Seed Project

You can support the Prophetstown Seed Project with your labor, time, and funds. On November 8, you can help braid the ears of corn and join in other harvest-related tasks, and then celebrate alongside members of the many tribes returning to Prophetstown for this gathering for the first time in over 200 years. Between now and the end of November you can make a donation to the Church for the Shawnee Seed Sanctuary, either online or by writing a check with “Shawnee Seed Sanctuary” in the subject line. We are trying to raise at least $8000 to help with the expenses related to supporting Shawnee elders and others attending the historic November Prophetstown gathering.
