October 11, 2026: Indiana, Land of the Indians

Dr. Stephanie Kimball and the Indigenous Studies Working Group

Euro-American and traditional indigenous attitudes toward land differ greatly: One sees it as property, as something to control and conquer; the other sees it as a partner, as something to nurture and live alongside. What can we learn from the latter?

Some actions you can take to support Native Americans locally:

  1. Write letters of support for the Prophetstown Planting Project to Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
  2. Ask questions about further development of educational displays and the building of a historically accurate native village at Prophetstown State Park.
  3. Write letters to the Tippecanoe County Historical Association, Indiana Landmarks, and Indiana Division of Historical Preservation and Archaeology to ask that Native Americans who died at the Battle of Tippecanoe be acknowledged on the grounds of that national historic landmark.
  4. Encourage expansion of land usage by Native Americans on other Indiana public lands.
  5. Explore the possibility of how Indiana could begin a land back program for the Native American tribes who lived on here.
  6. Ask that the state ensure scholarships are given to Native Americans at land grant colleges and other state universities and that these universities conduct outreach to young Native Americans.
  7. Form a group to create a plan to change creek names in Monroe County to their Native American name & take action.
  8. Sponsor field trips for local students to nearby places where Native Americans lived.
  9. Take a field trip with other UU folks to the Buffalo Trace remnant in Hoosier National Forest in Orange County.
  10. Support fundraising activities for the Shawnee Seed Sanctuary and the Prophetstown Alliance.
  11. Come to the Harvest Celebration at Prophetstown State Park on November 8 to strengthen personal relationships with Indiana’s Indians.
