Msamaria Mwema Children’s Home

Msamaria Mwema (Good Samaritan, in Swahili) is a Christian-oriented orphanage located at Kibiciku, Kiambu, just outside Nairobi. It was founded in 1997 by Peter and Winnie Chege, who began fostering three orphans in their home and the small surrounding compound. The orphanage houses numerous cows, pigs, and poultry. The operation generates its own biogas for cooking from the cow manure. A small patch of hillside serves as a potato field. The IOTF group visited in 2017 and spent several hours with the kids, who are bright, ambitious and optimistic.

The orphanage will use the funds we brought in 2017 mainly for infrastructure, building a new fence around the compound, and remodeling the kitchen to bring it up to standard for a group home. They now house some 33 children, a one third increase from two years ago, and are taking no new orphans unless they can build more housing for them. The children raise chickens and dairy cattle to help feed the group, while attending a nearby school.
