Other Music Opportunities
- Children's Hymn Sings – Once a month, the Sunday service opens with a children's hymn sing. Children raise their hands to suggest a number from the hymnal, and the congregation sings a verse from that hymn. This activity helps us explore our excellent hymnal and develop a shared culture of favorite songs.
- Large-Group Religious Education/Music Sundays – About four times a year, the Religious Education program offers large-group sessions dedicated to informal singing. Musical members of the congregation lead the children in familiar songs and teach new ones. These are informal sing-alongs, rather than performance opportunities.
- Instrumental or Vocal Preludes – For children who are comfortable performing solos or small groups in front of the congregation, there are opportunities to provide preludes for Sunday services. Please speak with the Music Director if you or your child would be interested in performing.
- Family Choir – Twice a year, we offer the opportunity for interested members of all ages to join the choir in a performance for a Sunday service. The Family Choir usually rehearses just once, before the service. The singers are given a word sheet or melody with words, then quickly taught the melody by ear. The choir provides harmony. The Family Choir provides an opportunity for intergenerational singing and a rich musical experience with very little time commitment. It is not recommended for children who will be anxious about learning and performing a number in one quick rehearsal. The ability to read is helpful.
- Sunday School, Special Services, Potlucks – We often have opportunities to sing in religious education classes (especially in the preschool and early primary classes), at special services (such as the Christmas Eve family service, Passover Seder, and peace vigils), Family Night potlucks, and other events. Singing is a joyful part of our congregational life.
The Fran Feddersen Memorial Fund is dedicated to the memory of longtime UU Church of Bloomington member Fran Feddersen, a kindergarten teacher and music lover, whose family's musical gatherings are legendary.
