Rainbow Rights Task Force

The purposes of the Rainbow Rights Task Force are:

  1. To educate the UU congregation regarding issues of concern to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning individuals.
  2. To register opposition and promote the defeat of the proposed amendment to the Constitution of the State of Indiana that would limit the definition of marriage to one man and to one woman, and restrict the incidents of marriage to that definition.
  3. To educate the electorate of Indiana regarding the proposed amendment and other issues of concern to GLBTQ individuals.

This past year the task force (in coordination with the First Church of Bloomington) hosted the showing of the film, Outlaws and Inlaws at the Monroe County Public Library. Members also participated in the annual Pride Festival in Indianapolis, where members distributed information and sold t-shirts. Task Force members also participated in the annual UU Holiday Bazaar and held the annual Valentine’s breakfast to raise funds for organizations supporting the work for GLBTQ issues. This year we contributed to Indiana Equality (IE) and the Interfaith Coalition on Nondiscrimination (ICON).

In the past, the Task Force members have co-hosted a Rural Training Workshop with over 60 attendees, participated in the Our Families Count Rally at the statehouse, and organized a letter/postcard writing campaign to senators and representatives opposing the Federal Marriage Protection (Discrimination) Amendment. We also sent letters individually and officially supporting the non-discrimination amendment for the City of Bloomington.

This year we are gearing up to offer the next level of the Welcoming Congregation program and will be offering forums in the near future. We are continually keeping abreast of the political situation as well. One of our main goals is to work with other religious organizations to respond to the religious right’s pronouncements, and to let people know (especially our legislators) that extremists do not speak for all religious peoples. We are actively working with Indiana Equality and the Interfaith Coalition on Nondiscrimination to broaden our impact.

The Rainbow Rights Task Force meets on the second Sunday of each month at 12:45 at the church. There is also an email listserv for communication with members of the task force; contact Phil Cooper.
